My home state of New Mexico is known for it's spectacular sunsets. I painted the center portion of this quilt during the summer of '92 when the Pinatubo volcano erupted in the Phillipines and the resulting ash created sunsets even more colorful than usual. The intensity of the fire in the sky both awed and inspired me ---if the sky at sunset could take on such spendid, saturated hues, then surely my fabric dyes could reflect the boldness, even just a little.
