Spirits in a Material World 49" x 43" $1,400 There is a song by Sting that I like, called "Spirits in the Material World" that deals with putting humans into their proper perspective as regards the Universe; sort of a 'dust in the wind' kind of theme. I started this piece with the resist-dyed silk that ultimately, 'contained' the 'spirits' which manifested themselves in the quilting. When these 'spirits' emerged as I began the free motion quilting, I realized that they were not benevolent spirits, but rather the spirits that we, as Children of God, deal with on a daily basis as we confront evil and the One who first defined it. As a measure of protection, a talisman, a mark on the door seal, the Sign of the Cross appeared in the same length of silk. The spirits in this material world beckon. We are admonished by the Word: "Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are of God. Every Spirit which confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, and every spirit which does not confess Jesus is not of God....they are of the world." 1John 4;1-5 |
